Joan Hardel

Joan Agnes Hardel, 90, of Berlin, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026, at Patriot Place surrounded by her family. She was born on August 21, 1935 at her parents’ home in the town of Poy Sippi, Waushara County. Joan was the first of six children born to Marvin and Alice (Johnson) Carpenter. She attended the district of Wild Rose School. On September 8, 1951, she was united in marriage to Clifford Hardel at First Lutheran Church in Poy Sippi. Together they began farming and raising a family. Joan taught her children that planting a seed was an act of hope, and that a good harvest was the reward for a life of hard work. Together they raised 6 children prior to them leaving the farm and moving into town. Joan worked 20 plus years as the Head Cook at Juliette Manor. After retirement she volunteered for decades at the Second Time Around Shop. Joan was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She was very involved with the Honorary Ladies Aid, Honorary Altar Guild, Funeral Committee, and Human Care Committee. Joan and Clifford enjoyed their Bus Tour Trips and Canadian fishing trips to Ten Mile Lake. She had an extensive collection of owls and Avon plates. She had a love for reading, whether it be books, magazines or the bible. She was always baking for her loved ones, a variety of cookies and breads. Playing and reading with her grandchildren. Joan is survived by her sons, David (Donna) Hardel and Mark Hardel; her daughter, Cathy (Jeff) Herbst; son-in-law, Allen Tetzke; sister, Beverly Kurtz; brothers, Richard (Michelle) Carpenter, Roger Carpenter and Keith (Vicky) Carpenter 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren. She is further survived by many other loving family members, neighbors and friends who will cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Hardel; her children, Daniel Hardel, Judy Tetzke, Patti Lewellyn; and daughters-in-law, Teresa Hardel and Connie Hardel. Her parents, Marvin and Alice Carpenter; sister, Nancy Chase; brothers-in-law, Ken Kurtz and Donald Chase; and sister-in-law, Sally Carpenter; along with many other family and friends. The family wishes to thank the staff at Patriot Place for their compassionate care. Visitation will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, Berlin on Friday, July 10, 2026 at 9:00-11:00am, followed by a Funeral service at 11:00am with Pastor Rob Schrader officiating. Burial will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery, Auroraville. A memorial has been established in memory of Joan.
