Gentius "Mike" Hamersma Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Gentius “Mike” Hamersma, age 87, of Van Dyne passed away peacefully at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac on December 24, 2020. He was born on October 7, 1933 in Pipestone, MN, the son of Henry and Alberta (White) Hamersma. Mike served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corp for 12 years and over 11 years in the reserves acting as Drill Sergeant. He retired from his service as Drill Sergeant with the rank of Master Sergeant. While in the service, he met his future wife, Nicole Josette, later marring her in Luxembourg in 1958. Together they shared 62 wonderful years together. After his service, Mike went on to build and become the sole proprietor of Hamersma Fabricators Inc., a steel fabricating company specializing in metal fabrication and the production of springs. Mike was a hardworking man who made work his hobby. He loved the outdoors and his life in the country with his pet cats. He enjoyed a good game of solitaire, but his true compassion was spending time with his family and following his grandson’s Wyatt’s many activities and sports. Not only was he proud of his grandson and family, but Mike was a proud Marine Corps Veteran who flew the US and Marine Corp flag together. Mike is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nicole Josette Hamersma; sons, Eric (Sue Novak) Hamersma of Berlin, and Carl Hamersma of Fond du Lac; grandson, Wyatt Hamersma; Sisters, Gretchen, Mary, Verna; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Alberta Hamersma; and brother, Charles Hamersma. Due to the many restrictions presented by the CDC during the COVID-19 Pandemic, the family has chosen to have a celebration of life at a later date. During this pause, family and friends are encouraged to view a tribute video dedicated to Mike on the funeral home’s website. The time and place of the celebration will be published at a later date. The Hamersma family would like to express their deep gratitude for the loving care and compassion given to Mike by the nurses and doctors of the St. Agnes Hospital Team during his brief illness.
