Edwin Lohela

Edwin Lohela, age 98, passed away on March 3, 2021 at the home of his daughter in Port Washington, WI. Ed was able to have loved ones with him at the end of his life as he died peacefully in his sleep. Ed’s parents, Hilma and John Lohela, immigrated to America from Finland and became part of a new community of immigrants. Ed was born at home the 8th of 10 children in South Range, Michigan on August 1, 1922. Ed graduated from Jeffer’s High School in Painesdale, Michigan where he played hockey. Ed was able to speak Finnish his whole life and would often offer up a greeting in Finnish to his family and friends. Ed moved to Milwaukee shortly after graduating from high school. In Milwaukee, Ed found work and his future bride, Dorothy Pipping. While living in Milwaukee, Ed served in the US Army as a medic at Fort Sheridan. Ed and his wife Dorothy were longtime Berlin residents having moved to Berlin from Milwaukee in 1960. Dorothy preceded Ed in death in 2016 after 74 years of marriage. Ed was able to enjoy a full and long 36 year retirement from Realist in Berlin where he worked and was well known. Ed and Dorothy very much enjoyed life and were involved in many activities at their church, St. John’s in Berlin, and in the community as well as being able to spend a lot of time with family and friends. Ed’s ability to play horseshoes at an amazing level impressed his family and anyone else brave enough to play with him. Ed moved on to play pool at the Patriot Place in his 90’s and he quickly became proficient. Ed was preceded in death by his 9 siblings, his beloved wife Dorothy, and his daughter Jeanne. Ed is survived by his daughters Nancy and Ellen as well as his son John. Ed will be very much missed and he will be remembered as a GREAT Dad, Grand Dad, Great Grand Dad, and Friend to many.
