Joseph Hoppa

Joseph Peter Hoppa “Joe”, age 86, of Berlin, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 10, 2022. Joseph was born August 15, 1935 in Princeton, Wisconsin to the late Joseph and Margaret (Clark) Hoppa. He was one of 10 Children. Joseph married the late Evelyn V. Hoppa in June of 1959 at Saint Michael’s Church in Berlin. They had 2 sons born from this union. Joseph was a member of the All Saints Catholic Parish in Berlin, Wisconsin. He and Evelyn attended mass every week. Joseph was a farmer most of his life but decided to purchase a car lot concessions business in downtown Chicago, IL and loved telling stories of his experiences there and the people he met, one being Marilyn Monroe. During the week he would work in Chicago and on the weekends, he would come home and help his parents on the farm. When his parents could no longer take care of the farm, Joseph purchased the farm he grew up on. Joseph wasn’t one to let grass grow beneath his feet and when not farming and selling vegetables he loved being outdoors; hunting, four-wheeling, and taking trips to auctions to see what deal he could bargain. He also loved to travel to his home in Orlando, Florida after retirement for the winters. It’s safe to say that no matter what Joseph put his mind to he put his passion into. He started investing in the stock market and that became his “job” he called it. He took pride in telling people about it and he was always more than willing to show you how it all worked. Joseph has been through a few close calls. In 2018 he was in a bad car accident. The doctors said he would probably never come out of it. He persevered and was able to shock the doctors. One of Joseph’s greatest joys was when his grandchildren were born but, even more so when his great grandchildren were born. His bond with them was unmatched. Joseph leaves to cherish his loving memory his children, Joseph Anthony Hoppa and Dennis Peter Hoppa; 3 grandchildren, Joseph Allen Hoppa, Jason Peter Hoppa, and Jessica (Nick) Gilbertson; and 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mike (Harold) Featherston and Margaret Jensen; his companion, Ann Moore; and host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Preceding him in death are his beloved wife, Evelyn; father, Joseph; mother, Margaret; brothers, Lawrence and Philip Hoppa; sisters, Josephine Kapp, Dorothy Taborahak, Mary Paeth, Genevieve Gaatz, and Laura Calamus. Family and friends may visit with the family and pay their respects to Joseph on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. also on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 from 9-11:00 a.m. at the Wiecki-Skipchak Funeral Home of Berlin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 19 at 11:30 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Parish in Berlin, with Father John Silva officiating. Interment will be held following services at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Berlin. He was a bright spark in this world and will be deeply missed by many. Joseph touched the lives of so many. He was a kind soul, never hesitated to help someone in need. Anyone that truly knew him, knew that he had such a big heart. Joseph loved fiercely and deeply, and we take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace surrounded by light.
