Jean Chier

Jean (Janssen) Chier passed away on Monday, June 20, 2022, at Patriot Place in Berlin, WI at the age of 91. She was born September 23, 1930, in Green Bay, WI to Urban and Lucille (McHugh) Janssen. Jean was a proud graduate of St. Joseph Academy in Green Bay and the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. On August 9, 1952, she married Carl Chier at St. Peter Catholic Church in Oshkosh. They celebrated 53 years of happiness together before Carl’s death in 2006. Jean was a devoted homemaker. Through her loving handiwork, countless babies were kept warm with her trademark beautiful hand-knit baby sweaters. After her six children were all in school, Jean began working at Berlin Public Library. There, she greeted many patrons with her warm smile and helpful attitude. Jean and Carl were avid Packer fans and season ticket holders for many years. Throughout her life, Jean was blessed with many wonderful friends and through the years she especially enjoyed her Monday morning coffee klatch group. A member of All Saints Catholic Church, Jean was also a woman of deep faith. Throughout her lifetime she prayed thousands of rosaries which she dedicated to anyone in need of prayers. She credited her faith for helping her face life’s journey with such an amazingly positive attitude. She never feared the next chapter of life because she always knew the Author. In recent years, Jean had been a resident of Patriot Place in Berlin where she passed her time reading books, laughing with her tablemates, cheering on her favorite Wisconsin sports teams, and amazing her friends and family with her quick wit and sharp memory. Jean enjoyed her visits with her many visitors and loved “sharing” her large family with other residents. Jean’s passing leaves a void in many lives. The best way to keep her memory alive is by sharing a smile, a prayer, or a kind act with others. Jean will be deeply missed by her daughters Beth (Jim) Nighbor, Jane (Mike) Bartol, Mary (Larry) Hutzler, and Amy (Marty) Wenig, all of Berlin, Patti (Pete) Quinn of Knoxville, TN, and son Chris (Sue) Chier of Wind Lake, WI, She is further survived by fifteen grandchildren: Carey, Jimmy, Meghan, Jacob, Nick, Erik, Matt, Heidi, Gretchen, Melissa, Nicole, Emily, Gregor, Becca, and Ryan. She was also “GiGi” to eighteen great-grandchildren: Paige, Aaron, Ryne, Emma, Beckett, Piper, Paisley, Thatcher, Saylor, Nash, Claire, Kyle, Braiden, Penelope, Calvin, Owen, Jackson, and Lydia. Jean is also survived by her sister Mary Lynne (Mike) LeRoy and two sisters-in-law Joan (Ken) Keller and Peg Janssen. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Carl, and three brothers Tom, David, and Cyril. Funeral services with the Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at 12:00 pm at All Saints Catholic Church of Berlin with Father John Silva officiating. Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery of Berlin. Relatives and friends may call at the Wiecki-Skipchak Funeral Home of Berlin on Monday, June 27, 2022 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm with a rosary being recited at 6:45. Visitation will also be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:30 am before leaving for the services at the church. The family wishes to send a special thank you to Dr. Craig Batley, Heartland Hospice, the staff at Patriot Place, Sister Michaeleen, and Father John Silva for their kind and compassionate care of Jean.
